WILMINGTON, N.C., April 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — On April 15th, the U.S. Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) received a response from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to a long standing appeal and Request for Correction under the Information Quality Act (IQA). In rejecting USARK’s contention that the USGS failed to maintain a high standard of quality for their work as required by IQA, the USGS stated, “This document was not designated by the USGS as a highly influential scientific document,” and therefore subject to IQA standards. USARK rejects this statement as self serving and believes the document to be “highly influential” based on the exact criteria laid out by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and, therefore, subject to the IQA standards.
Reptile Industry Calls for Congressional Oversight on US Fish & Wildlife Service
On 30 March 2011, US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) transmitted a Final Rule to the White House Office of Management & Budget (OMB) for review. If adopted, this rule would add nine constricting snakes to the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act, therefore preventing all movement in interstate commerce.
The United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) believes the proposed rule fails on both the science and the cost-benefit analysis. USARK believes that the “science” that is being fielded to justify this action is highly controversial, and the action shows complete disregard for due process and economic impact. If enacted this rule would destroy thousands of businesses and place nearly one million US citizens in jeopardy of becoming felons under the Lacey Act.
Re-working website… Again!
It seems like I just redid my website. Updates to the shopping cart software I use totally broke the site. Unfortunately, this seems to happen every time they come out with an update. So, I was forced to redo everything. With the exception of a few minor bugs, I have most everything working. Now I just have to finish styling the theme. This time I am going to use a white theme as I think it’s easier on the eyes. Let me know what you think of the site.
Also, keep an eye on my available page. I have many VERY nice boas I will be listing as soon as the site is complete. These animals are top notch and will be sold at great prices.
No pythons captured during six-week hunt
More evidence that a bitter winter took a big bite out of Burmese pythons and other exotic invaders: Florida wildlife managers ended a six-week hunt on state lands bordering the Everglades without a single snake captured.
Proof Florida Burmese Not The Fault of Lazy Pet Owners!
Here is a post made by Harlin Wall from WALL TO WALL REPTILES explaining how the Burmese Python was introduced into the Florida Everglades. The media, extremist groups, and others put blame on irresponsible pet owners. Too bad they don’t report the facts!
The interesting thing about the Florida Problem…
There is a Burmese Python population in the Everglades…(at least there still was until before this last winter)….but we have solid evidence, based on country-of-origin import records and DNA samples, which disproves the theory of “irresponsible pet owners” releasing these snakes into the Everglades.
The feral population of Burmese Pythons was a product of hurricane Andrew. It was NOT caused by careless keepers.
Yet the media continues to chant that tired, old (false) mantra.
The general public needs to know the facts.
In Response to the Recent HSUS Email Campaign
Mike Lynch from Boa Tails makes an excellent response to the recent HSUS email campaign. It is long, but a worthwhile read. Mike does a nice job explaining and rebutting statements made by HSUS:
I haven’t made any updates to the site since the beginning of March. This is due to being tied up with work. …What time I have on the computer has been almost entirely work related. Well, the HSUS recently did something that brought me out of hiding – as it were. They started a letter/e-mail campaign regarding how large constrictors are dangerous, and should be listed as injurious. To anyone familiar with the HSUS this comes as no surprise since they are out to systematically remove all animals from the pet industry, and have already made steps with that regard by successfully banning the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores in the state of California.
